Mockingjays and other critters

I’ve been working on purses and drawstring backpacks for the Beehive Bazaar Handmade Craft Fair here in Utah May 10-12th (and eventually etsy too).

My Hunger Games fan-club-kids are all itching to carry this backpack to school, the only way it would be better is if Peeta’s face was in place of the mockingjay symbol.

I love this furry orange fabric, but it sure is hard to sew. It gets all caterpillary and unruly when under the presser foot and the seams have to be picked out at least once- every. time. I. sew. with. it.- ugh.
When we were in Washington DC last week with my daughter’s 6th grade class, one of the students looked at a gated, guarded building (I don’t remember what it was) as we drove past and wistfully sighed, “That must be where they keep the unicorns and rainbows.” That comment is still making me laugh. Here are a few unicorns that got away and a bit of sparkle.

I can’t seem to stop with the circle stacked flowers.
Scribble sewing bird beak.
I didn’t take any chances here- I hate picking out bad stitching, I hand-sewed that bunny onto the delinquent orange fabric.

The next batch, some tiny purses, all ready to go.

I love your stacked circle flowers, so cute! I’m not as brave as you with mixing things up..

Give ‘mixing it up’ a try, your kids will think you’ve gone crazy.
