bicycle birthday cake

bicycle cakeThe little man turned 5 today. He requested a bicycle birthday cake and this is how it turned out. Quite simple, but it didn’t stress me out or take forever, and that means a lot. Making a cake in the shape of a bike would have really been something else and about as difficult as any cake I can imagine. No thank you folks.  Thank goodness for Airheads, Twizzlers and Skittles. When I go to the candy aisle with a cake in mind, it’s a completely different experience than looking for a snack. All of the sudden you’re looking at shapes, sizes and colors of candy (aka bicycle cake building materials) and what will be the most useful candies for coming up with a certain look or shape. Airheads were gold in this case, and the Twizzlers you can peel apart.
bike cakeI would recommend doing some bike research before hand. What look do you want- BMX, mountain bike, road bike, old school with-a-banana-seat bike and the list goes on… you want to make sure you get the right look in your frame geometry and wheel size and thickness. Then, have a picture handy when your building the bike, it will make getting the right look so much easier. Good luck cake makers/party planners!

Take a look at some of my other kid birthday cake here- I’ll always try to make whatever my kids request, I love a challenge!
