scrappy pioneer quilt top
Got ‘er all sewn together- quite time consuming yet fulfilling- since it’s been on my list for about a year.
Now, I need to get it quilted. I’ve hesitated in getting on a machine quilting list at a local quilt shop because I’m convinced I can get it done cheaper… somehow. I just want a simple puzzle piece machine quilting pattern on it. Anyone local got a quilting machine I can rent and try out for myself? I heard they’re really fun to operate.

February 24, 2012 at 10:53 pmI’ve been looking forward to your next quilt post!
It looks great! You have inspired me to think about tackling one.
How will you ‘stuff’ the quilt?

February 25, 2012 at 12:09 amThanks, I’ll follow the progress of this quilt all the way through to the finish. My plan is to put a medium weight batting (probably Warm & Natural) under this pieced top and then just a plain cotton fabric for the back- probably an upcycled king sized flat sheet to avoid any seams and keep costs down. Then the top-stitching or machine quilting will sew all 3 pieces together.

February 24, 2012 at 11:54 pmVery nice! Someday I want to learn how to quilt, so that I can make something like this for myself. I’m envious of your skill.

February 25, 2012 at 12:04 amIt’s not very hard- just hours of straight lines… you can do it!

February 25, 2012 at 2:30 amIt is lovely! Have you considered doing a more traditional quilting style for the top? My mom has one of those uber fancy sewing machines that does the all-over quilting, and while I think they look pretty, they seem to make the quilts so stiff. I don’t know, it’s clearly a matter of personal preference, but I think something simple would compliment the pioneer fabulousness of the piece and would have the benefit of being something you don’t have to hire out.

February 25, 2012 at 3:18 amI kind of like the stiffness of machine quilting but I know what you mean about keeping it simple. It’s too big (queen size) for a regular machine- it’s going to have to be machine quilted, hand quilted or tied.

February 27, 2012 at 5:14 amThanks, it’s for my mom’s bed and breakfast (slotcanyonsinn.com)- to go on a actual bed (not be hung on the wall) in a cabin. That’s one of the reasons for keeping costs down- it’s going to wear out pretty fast and get washed a lot.
