Mountain Spaa- intro

A couple of miles from our house lie the ruins of an old resort called Mountain Spaa. I’m not exactly sure how long it has been abandoned and wasting away but I believe it saw it’s best times in the 1940’s. Midway is known for the geothermal activity just below the surface and all of the current resorts in town have some sort of crater (The Homestead) or hot spring pool (Zermatt) for warm water enjoyment. Mountain Spaa, the great grandfather, preceded all the others with multiple warm water pools with the warm water literally piped right into this pool from a crater on the property. Needless to say, it’s hard to stay away. All the remnants of the past rotting and falling apart is extremely intriguing and a great place to take pictures.

This doorway leads into an dry, empty crater that I cannot for the life of me figure out what it was used for. My best guess was that it was once perhaps a sauna.

One lovely thing that remains are snatches of layer upon layer of floral wallpaper, at times peeling away to reveal it’s wallpaper predecessors.

Our main reason for trespassing, is a photo shoot my 10th grader has been planning for months now. She’s become a lover and collector of vintage items- check out this pin board she’s created. She signed herself up for a photography class- all with this day in mind. Here is one of her pictures, actually all of her pictures are rolled up tight on actual film, awaiting processing- we’re all holding our breath, with our fingers crossed.

If I’ve peaked your interest and you’d like to see more, stay tuned and I’ll post more pictures tomorrow. I’m working on a flickr set too, but I’ve got hundreds of pictures to sort through. I couldn’t stop snapping pictures, until I had to…my camera battery died.

What is it about an empty pool?
