Seat assignment: lavatory self portraits in the Flemish style
Back home and having recently climbed out of an airplane myself, I can clearly see the motivation for this performance art.
To pass the time on long flights artist Nina Katchadourian adorns herself with materials available in the airplane bathroom in a ongoing collection that began in 2010 she calls “Seat Assignment: Lavatory Self Portraits in the Flemish Style”. So fantastic- but how does she manage to keep a straight face?
How it all began: While in the lavatory on a domestic flight in March 2010, I spontaneously put a tissue paper toilet cover seat cover over my head and took a picture in the mirror using my cellphone. The image evoked 15th-century Flemish portraiture.

April 19, 2012 at 8:16 pmJust discovered your blog, and I’ve been having fun looking around (my 12-year-old loved the hunger games stuff). I think the cushion/neck one is my favourite too. it’s partly the expression on her face, as you say, how on earth does she manage to keep a straight face?
