Exploring the Allure of Vintage Sewing Patterns

vintage Butterick sewing patterns

This week, titled “Sewing for Art,” I am getting to work using these vintage Butterick sewing patterns from my collection for some skirts for the art show at Gallery One Ten that Steve O and I are doing in April. I have good ideas in my head if I can just make them come true, in real life.

Reflections on Vintage Butterick Patterns: I need to make serious sizing adjustments. Body sizes and shapes are different now than 50 years ago. Part of my attraction to these vintage Butterick patterns, specifically Butterick 3511, is the drawings on the front. The idealized ‘she would have to be wearing a corset’ look is visually appealing. However, it is completely unrealistic. I confess these thoughts and feelings, albeit with some shame.
